Whether your young athlete is a seasoned pro or new to the game, proper pre-season preparation is crucial for a healthy, successful, and injury-free season. Here’s your ultimate checklist to ensure your athlete hits the ground running this fall:

  • Schedule That Sports Physical NOW! Don’t wait until the last minute! Most schools and leagues require a current sports physical for participation. Getting this done early allows ample time for any follow-up appointments or necessary clearances. Think of it as your athlete’s green light to play – without it, they’re sidelined.
  • Embrace Gradual Conditioning, Ditch the Cramming. It’s tempting to try and do too much, too fast, especially after a relaxing summer. However, sudden intense activity is a prime cause of injuries. Encourage light, consistent exercise in the weeks leading up to official practices. This could include jogging, swimming, cycling, or sport-specific drills that gradually increase in intensity. Our coaches can offer tailored advice for gentle re-entry!
  • The All-Important Equipment Check. Growing bodies mean equipment that fit last season might not fit this one. Check shoes for proper fit and wear, inspect protective gear (pads, helmets, guards) for damage, and ensure uniforms are ready. Well-fitting and maintained equipment isn’t just about comfort; it’s about safety.
  • Establish a Winning Routine. The transition from summer freedom to the structured school year, plus sports, can be a juggle. Help your athlete establish a consistent routine that prioritizes sleep (crucial for recovery!), balanced meals, homework, and practice. A predictable schedule reduces stress and optimizes performance.
  • Mental Game Strong: Prepare Their Mindset. Sports isn’t just physical; it’s mental. Discuss goals for the season (both individual and team), teach your kid strategies for managing pre-game nerves, and emphasize the importance of a positive attitude, regardless of wins or losses. Encourage them to focus on effort, improvement, and enjoying the process.
