As the old saying goes, there is no “I” in team. This simple phrase is one of our main beliefs here at CAL Sports Academy. Not only do we strive to build and improve an athlete’s skills, we also try to build their confidence, initiative and teamwork.
“Sports does a lot for many kids as exercise keeps them healthy, builds self-confidence, and teaches them how to work together as a team all; key things that will be used throughout their lives,” Coach Corey said.
From the moment an athlete steps foot in the gym, CAL Sports exudes friendliness and promotes relationships. Even though tryouts are meant to be serious so a player’s true strengths and weaknesses can be seen, Coach Corey makes it a priority to guide them through the process, giving them tips along the way.
“I might never see some of the athletes again and I feel it’s my duty to offer advice. After all, a little advice or some direction can change a person’s life,” Coach Corey said.
Once an athlete is part of the team, CAL Sports focuses on making it a family affair. At our annual Parent’s Meeting, returning parents interact with new parents. By forming these relationships early in the season, it sets a great example for our student-athletes.
Oftentimes, CAL athletes are from different schools, neighborhoods and even cities. To help break the ice, CAL coaches will ask athletes to exchange cell phone numbers and encourage them to talk outside of the gym.
“Earlier this year, I challenged my team to read a book and write a one page summary with a deadline, which they all met,” Coach Corey said. “As a result, I rewarded the team with a trip to Dorney Park. This is just one example of how friendships can form over a lifetime.”
One of the main reasons CAL Sports athletes and teams are so successful is because of the strong relationships that are formed between athletes and their teammates, coaches and families.
“I noticed that teams that stayed together for two or more years built stronger friendships and the chemistry certainly improved their performance on the court, but more they self-esteem,” Coach Corey said. “As a former athlete, establishing respectable friendship encourages the entire team to work and play together, because Together, Everyone, Achieves, More.”
